Neck Pain and Chiropractic: Can a chiropractor help with my neck pain?

Dr Philip Altieri

Neck pain is a very common problem with many possible causes and contributing factors. Cervical spine pain, commonly referred to as neck pain, can be the result of muscle spasm, muscle strain, hunching over, forward head position, poor posture, arthritis, whiplash, facet syndrome, degenerative joint disease, spinal stenosis, bulging disc, herniated disc, repetitive stress movements, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ, TMS), nerve compression such as a pinched nerve, or rarely but more serious, a space occupying lesion such as a tumor to name but a few. This why you should not ignore neck pain and have your symptoms evaluated and thoroughly examined by an expert in the field of musculoskeletal pain such as a chiropractor!

If you experience neck pain, consult with a qualified chiropractor for a proper assessment and a recommended course of treatment to resolve the cause of the painful neck condition. Taking medications, be it prescribed or over-the-counter (OTC), only temporarily help alleviate the pain in the neck and add nothing to the overall-long term resolution of the cause or underlying condition. Quite frankly, taking drugs could worsen your condition by permitting restricted movements or undesirable activities to occur that the body and brain would sense and normally not allow. This could cause further irritation, inflammation, breakdown, degeneration and pain overall and set you up for more serious neck pain and chronic problems in the future. Plus, we all know how addictive painkillers can be as we have a very serious opioid epidemic crisis currently.

Chiropractic care can be a great option for the management and resolution of neck pain. Chiropractic care offers proven non-surgical treatment options that can reduce the discomfort and resolve the underlying cause of your neck pain. The pain, swelling, muscle spasm and restricted movement can all be addressed and reduced fairly quickly in most circumstances through safe, gentle chiropractic care. But, a thorough chiropractic physician will also look into the host of possible root causes that may be the primary condition that is producing the neck pain and associated symptoms. Afterall, don’t we all want to “fix” the problem and not just band-aid the condition or get a “short term” relief. Chiropractic care can relieve the symptoms of neck pain such as muscle spasm, swelling, range of motion restriction and discomfort while also treating the underlying condition for which is producing the unwanted painful symptoms.

Chiropractors offer many safe, non-invasive treatment options for the resolution of neck pain. For starters, chiropractic adjustments reduce joint restrictions or misalignments in the spine, commonly referred to as vertebral subluxations, to not only reduce muscle spasm and inflammation, but to improve mobility and function of both the affected joints and nervous system. Neck pain may also respond to other forms of treatment options and protocols that chiropractors offer such as ultrasound therapy, electro-muscular stimulation, cold laser therapy, trigger point therapy, myofascial release techniques, therapeutic exercises, stretching, flexion-distraction technique, instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy, postural re-education, and kinesiology taping techniques to name but a few!

Chiropractic care is also a great choice not only in the short term relief of neck pain, but, in the long term care of chronic neck pain and the maintenance and prevention of it. Chiropractic helps to restore balance and function to the nervous system, spine, and peripheral joints to allow proper communication between the brain and body. Proper mobility and joint function needs to be present in order for homeostasis and body balance to occur, this is just one of the benefits that chiropractic offers. Chiropractic can relieve neck pain by reducing the muscular discomfort, decreasing inflammation, improving range of motion and flexibility, and restoring balance to the nervous system and spine. Chiropractic is a great treatment choice for neck pain as it is proficient, practical, economical, efficient, natural and safe.
